Artist's Statement

In the 21st century, we are aggressively being catapulted into this cyber age
of information overload. Making contemplative and utilitarian objects by
hand, may appear anachronistic and at odds with the spirit of the times.
However, the ceramic discipline, with cultural and historical links to rituals of
everyday life, encompasses society, religion and philosophy. Like music and
poetry, it expresses a world of complexity and awe, with the capacity to touch
the soul. The archetypal significance of the home, as a point where our
spiritual and earthy lives interconnect is where I have attempted to explore these ideas.

My exploration has spread over many diverse influences which are apparent
in the eclectic and perhaps seemingly disparate works on show. Patterns and colours of the
African urban and natural landscape including botanical images, meet Art Deco
and Russian Suprematist imagery. In turn figurative subject matter forms a narrative across
plates and vases. The patterns and colours of these resonate in both single and composite
wall panels which combine poetic text, graphic marks of African writing and portrait faces.

Using a variety of techniques such as throwing, hand-building and slip-casting
I work with earthenware clays combined with underglazes, slips and glazes.

NEW IN THE GALLERY FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST

From August 2010 – I will have an “Image Gallery” on my blog…. New pieces find their way into the gallery – almost on a daily basis. I will endeavour – through my blog, to give you – a “virtual” glimpse of what is being exhibited and what is on show in the gallery at any given time. Should you require more information – general or specific on anything – please feel free to send an e-mail or call us. We would be happy to assist in any way possible…… I also send images to individual clients – who have particular requests – regarding a specific piece - questions that you might have – or an inclination to research something that has prompted you to question further…… Personal relationships – and connections are something that I feel very strongly about. I hope this new “Gallery” inspires you to look closer at the material I am so passionate about….. It gives me great pleasure to share it with you.

LINDELANI

NGWENYA

AN EXHIBITION

OF COPPER WIRE

WOVEN AND CONSTRUCTED

SCULPTURES

OPENING: SATURDAY 29th May 2010 10am – 5pm

PREVIEW: FRIDAY 28th MAY 2010 10am – 5 pm

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Lindelani started wood carving at the age of eight.

Taught by his father who was a fine sculptor,

he developed his weaving technique by studying

the traditional grass-weaving techniques employed by

women in Kwa-Zulu, Natal.

Sculpting around an empty space is an attempt to make the invisible visible.

My concern is to break the boundaries between the mortal and

my immortal part, thus reviving Zulu religious systems which

expresses oneness between the Living and the Dead.

Transparent wire form is an invitation for the viewer to

‘Penetrate’ the artwork –

To see the actual artwork inside.

The finished product becomes the actual veins

of the Artist himself.

The process of wire weaving is very similar to certain dance movements and is a very absorbing exercise –

Similar to playing musical instruments.

Weaving (performance) and a

Finished Artwork become One.

THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION
